Have a reminisce with me for a second.  How many of you remember meat and 2 (or 3) veg for dinner most nights of the week?  Pasta when you're feeling fancy, or chips or pizza on a Friday night?

 

A few of you are nodding I suspect. 

 

How many of you reading this, still eat like that?  Yup I was like that too.  Those were my nights too.  

 

After a full day at work, trying to figure out what to make for dinner can be a challenge.  So we go to the same things over and over again and the things that your mum made are probably on rotation.

 

Now I am in no way judging your choices here.  I'm all for an easy life.  But what if the easy road is also the road to sugar spikes and weight gain?

 

Don't get me wrong, I love carbs.  We need carbs to keep us energiesd (I can hear the ketonians shout at the screen already).  Our body uses sugars, and carbohydrates for fuel.  Why do you think you want something sweet around 3pm?

 

Carbs are great to give us lots of energy to use during the day, but at night, those carb laden meals will just end up going into storage overnight while we're sleeping.    Have you ever sat there on the couch with your meal just sitting there like a lead weight? 

 

If so, maybe it's time to change it up a little.

 

Here are 5 lower carb side dishes or meals to vary up your week.  

 

1.

 

1. Spiralized Parsnip "Noodles" with Cherry Tomatoes, Basil, Tempeh, and Goat Cheese from Buzzfeed
 

 I have tried zoodles before but "poodles"?!?!  I never thought that I could love parsnips any more but it turns out... I CAN!!!

 

 
 
2. Healthy Baked Broccoli Tots from Gimme Delicious.
 
As a kid, I loved tater tots!  As an adult however, I know that they're not the healthiest of things.  Enter baked broccoli tots!  
These are baked so if you still want to have the crunchy outside texture, feel free to pan fry them in olive oil. 
 
Note: They won't be soooo healthy but it's olive oil so you'll be fine.
 
 
 
3. Pan Fried Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Cranberries from Low Carb Yum
 
Brussels sprouts are for life, not just for Christmas, and with this recipe, you'll want to eat them all year round.  I mean face it.  Bacon makes anything better right?
 
 
 
4. Grilled Asparagus from Allrecipes.com
 
I think this is just the simplest recipe ever!  If you're feeling adventurous, throw a few toasted almonds in there too.  yummy
 
 
 

 

5. Carrot Fries from my own fair hands.

 

I love making fries out of various root vegetables as I find potatoes to just be a bit boring and bland.  So here is my recipe for carrot fries.  It's dead simple and all you need to do is chop up the veges that look right for you and your family/partner/dog and bung them in the oven with some oil and salt & pepper.
